Depending on your location, when selling to customers in other states, you may need to charge sales tax.
Sales taxes have various names, in different regions of the world:
VAT (Value Added Tax)
GST (Goods and Services Tax)
HST (Harmonized Sales Tax)
PST (Provincial Sales Tax)
Sales Tax (United States)
To add tax to your bookings and invoices, use the Tax brackets on the Terms > Offer tab of the bookings:
By default, taxes will be added on top of your Guarantee, however, if needed, you can use the 'Tax is inclusive' toggle to include the tax in the amount:
Difference Between Tax Inclusive and Exclusive
Gigwell allows you to calculate sales tax in two ways. Tax inclusive or exclusive.
Tax Inclusive means the tax is included in the guarantee and it's deducted from the total.
Tax Exclusive means the tax is on top of the guarantee as an added amount.
Removing tax from a deposit invoice
Tax is set at booking level, not per invoice, so every invoice the booking generates inherits the booking's tax percentage — deposits included. There's no toggle to switch tax off on one deposit while leaving it on the rest.
Which situation are you in?
Decide first whether tax doesn't apply to this booking at all, or only doesn't apply to this one deposit. The answer changes what you do.
Tax doesn't apply to this booking at all. Confirm that with your accountant first, then:
Open the booking and go to Terms → Offer.
Set the tax percentage to zero.
Create the deposit invoice again. Invoices already created keep the tax they were created with — see the invoicing article on changing tax or withholding on an invoice for how to unlock those.
Tax applies to the booking, just not to this deposit.
Open the deposit invoice.
Type the exact amount you're actually collecting into the invoice.
Let the balance invoice absorb the difference, so the deposit plus the balance still add up to the full amount you're owed.
Check that arithmetic before you issue either invoice. If the two don't sum correctly, you'll under-bill or over-bill your buyer, and the settlement will inherit the gap.
Make the next one easier
Set the payment schedule to a fixed amount rather than a percentage. A flat deposit figure is much simpler to enter than a percentage that recalculates every time tax changes.
Good to know
Tax can't be switched off for one deposit while staying on the balance — it's a booking-level setting. A withholding deduction can't be applied to only one invoice in a payment plan either.
Zeroing the booking's tax percentage affects every invoice created from then on, so only do it if tax genuinely doesn't apply to the whole booking.
Once an invoice is created, its tax field locks. Changing the booking percentage afterwards won't flow back into it.
